Boston FD and Embryo Creative: Working together to raise Firefighters awareness of Cancer Risks
The Boston Fire Department has worked with Embryo Creative to create awareness about properly cleaning fire equipment. The cancer rate for firefighters is 2.5 to 3x the risk as compared to other residents of the city of Boston. The first video entitled ‘Cancer’ recently won an advertising award in Boston.

“A firefighter is more likely to die of cancer than in a fire. The deadliest part of the job strikes silently, patiently, after years of carcinogenic fumes and toxic chemicals leech into the bloodstream, the lungs, and the brain. The flame retardants that coat your furniture, prevent the spread of a fire, and save lives — those same chemicals are a catalyst for cancer. In Boston alone, a firefighter is diagnosed with cancer at a rate 2.5 times the city average.
“We were honored to work closely with the Boston Fire Department last year on these videos that shed light on such an important subject matter. From day one we knew that the ‘Cancer” video could be something special beyond a training video and that’s why we suggested the memorial wall honoring fallen firefighters. We hope viewers felt the same sense of family, love, respect and camaraderie that we felt while filming, and that the video continues to honor those cancer victims while preventing future cases.
“The second video we produced, ‘Prevention’, came about earlier this year. We know this video is making a big impact among firefighters and the community and continues to keep the conversation going. More than 20,000 people have taken the time to watch the video in two months. It’s beyond producing a great video for our team, we imagine a world where firefighters won’t die of cancer.”
