Over 500 social high-rise buildings to be retrofitted with sprinklers
Following the disastrous fire at Grenfell Tower in London, which has killed at least 80 people, over 500 social high-rise buildings are to be retrofitted with sprinklers. More than 20 English local councils are not waiting for the results of the central government enquiry and will retrofit the buildings in their area.
The requirement to fit sprinklers in new high-rise residential buildings in England took effect in 2007, so older social high-rise buildings are not protected with sprinklers.
Residents and the press have launched campaigns in other local jurisdictions, targeting over 1,000 additional buildings.
