2015 saw the debut of the much awaited Carmichael Cobra 3 with HRET (High Reach Extendible Turret) optional, from Simon-Carmichael International Group (SIG). The new Cobra 3 is the result of three years design and development in Worcester, UK, continuing a heritage that saw its first aviation fire fighting vehicle manufactured in 1962. Ideas and suggestions were sought from Airport firefighters throughout the UK and incorporated as features in the new design.

Carmichael Cobra 3 follows the successful Cobra and Cobra 2 range and achieves superior operational performance over its major competitors including:

  • Increased braking (European disc brakes all round) and steering efficiency, ZF.
  • 700 HP Engines, suitable to meet up to Euro 5 emissions standards.
  • 0-80km/h within 30 seconds / top speed 115 km/h
  • Increased payload capacity with stronger front suspension and upgraded European axles.
  • New CAN based electrical systems. Improved access for electrical maintenance in cab.
  • Cab certified to European Commercial Chassis Safety Standard ECE R29 built with recyclable material (polypropylene).
  • Latest control systems technology.
  • Designed to fit the latest upgraded version of an HRET – the SIG – Jet Ranger.

Cobra 3 has the largest and widest cab in its class, with up to six seats (1+5) and also incorporates a full L-shaped hatch allowing safe access to the monitor platform while the vehicle is in motion. The newly designed cab has increased horizontal and vertical visibility. Roof monitor and bumper turret are operated by joystick from within the cab, whilst the roof monitor can also be operated manually from the roof monitor platform. Electronic foam proportioning is selectable between 1% and 10% from within the cab or at the pump control panel.

SIG Carmichael Cobra 3 series is available in 4×4, 6×6 and 8×8 configurations with up to 22000L of water and offers commonality of systems and controls for operators’ ease of use. Meets or exceeds NFPA 414, ICAO, FAA and British CAP 168. SIG wanted to make ARFF vehicles that will provide outstanding performance worldwide, including Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa and the Cobra 3 range will outperform its rivals, whatever the climate, humidity or terrain.

SIG believes that its Cobra 3 AFRR vehicle range, with its superior performance, quality and reliability, has what it takes to compete against better known brands. Asia is a very important market for the Cobra 3 and we look forward to introducing it to our new and existing customers in the coming months.

Cobra 3 can be supplied with its Jet Ranger HRET ‘high reach extendible turret’ the JET RANGER is the most advanced HRET on the market. The JET RANGER booms rotate allowing the elevated waterway to be manoeuvred in all directions without the need to keep moving the ARFF vehicle.

Fuselage Spike with its ULTRA MOTION fully proportional technology, provides fine movement when breaking windows or rapid fire when piercing aircraft plate or a combination of the two to give smoke ventilation or water drainage at any position on the fuselage. The Spike is able to rotate 270 degrees and can be positioned at any angle on the side, top and bottom of the fuselage to apply fire-fighting media wherever it is needed most. The Jet Ranger has both standard and FLIR cameras, mounted near on the tip of the boom allowing the operator to quickly evaluate the fire scene.
