Volcanic eruption warning issued for Mt Io in Kyushu, Japan

Japan’s weather agency on Sunday the 28th February issued an alert for the possible eruption of Mt Io a volcano in the southwest of the country, following an increase in noticeable seismic activity and based on recent eruptions. A no-entry warning has been issued in both Miyazaki and Kagoshima prefectures.

On Friday 26th Feb only 70km away from the current warning area Mount Sakurajima erupted. The eruption became even more spectacular when a lightning storm took place in front of all that lava emitting a glowing nighttime lava flows studded with bursts of lightning.

Authorities in the city of Ebino City have taken the warning very seriously because of more than 30 volcanic-related temblors being recorded as of noon Sunday and has declared a no-entry zone around the crater of Mt Io, which is part of the Kirishima mountain.
