Cyclone Penny is currently sitting off the northeast coast of Australia near Cooktown as a tropical low but, could reform into a cyclone as it approaches land.
This will be the third time the storm has reformed as it crosses the Cape York peninsular. Often cyclones have a single rebirth, to have three is quite rare. Starting on the 30th Dec. Penny formed as a category two Cyclone making landfall and crossing the peninsular then reformed as it went out to sea.
Downgraded again on the 4th Jan but now building in intensity and could reform for the third time. The machinations of Penny are causing havoc across the top end with strong winds and sitting ran.
“It has been moving east but we suspect it’s about to come back to the west again – like a yo-yo,” “We’ve had a few visits from Penny, she does seem to be wandering around looking for a home.” said meteorologist Gordon Banks.
