Australian firefighters home lost in bushfire while he is out protecting others.

While fighting a 3,500-hectare fire in Carwoola, just outside Australia’s capital city, Canberra, firefighter Peter Bavingtons was not aware that his home was under attack from the same fire. Firefighter Bavington lost his house and all his possession as the fire came through, along with eight other homes.

RFS Deputy Commissioner Rob Rogers on Saturday praised Mr Bavington’s sheer selflessness in opting to battle the flames as they threatened neighboring properties despite the cost to himself. Among the irreplaceable belongings lost were photographs and a piano Mr Bavington’s mother had learned to play on but he seemed in good spirits and resigned to the loss.

Mr Bavington praised his fellow volunteers and the evacuation system, saying clothes were found for his family – even sports gear for his son who had a game to play on Saturday morning.
