Central Station, Sydney fire chaos

Central Station, Sydney fire chaos

On Saturday night the 26th Sept Sydney’s main rail station was thrown into chaos when a fire broke out in the Hungry Jack’s fast food restaurant at 06.15pm.

Twenty fire appliances and 100 firefighters from city fire station quickly brought the fire under control but not before significant travel disruption to many commuters.

The fire started in the Hungry Jack’s ventilation system that travels through all four levels of Central railway station, the fire quickly spread throughout the building. The station was evacuated, forcing a 1000 people to leave the station and surrounding concourse. Trains could still move through the station but could not stop at platforms 1-15.

The westbound lanes of Eddy Avenue were closed, with buses using Hay Street instead. The light rail was stopped between the Convention Centre and Central Station.

Although a fast spreading fire the crews managed to control the fire in 50 minutes, stopping what could have been a major fire disrupting rail travellers for days.
