Industrial environments differ from other types of environments where rescue operations need to be carried out, mainly because of the additional risks they present. The presence of polluting gases, atmospheres with low oxygen levels, cramped and poorly lit environments, or hot and live parts of equipment can generate risks that are completely different from mountain, urban or water environments.
Statistics show that most accidents in industrial confined spaces are characterized by respiratory problems including hypoxia intoxication and poisoning. The US National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) estimates that more than 75% of problems related to life-threatening atmospheres are the leading cause of death in confined-space activities. NIOSH estimates that about 60% of fatalities in confined spaces are those who attempt to rescue colleagues.
These environments are characterized by small access routes, poor natural ventilation and an architectural design that makes them cramped and restricts the movements of the patient and rescuer. Time and efficiencies are critical to the rescue team. The Ferno XT Pro performs its best in industrial environments when it is necessary to manage traumatic events inside these places.
The XT Pro extrication device is part of the Ferno family of devices for traumatic immobilization. Robust and light, it stands out for its simplicity of use and fast donning. It has the 93/42/EEC certification (Medical Devices – Class I) and certified according to EN 1498:2007 (Personal fall protection equipment – Rescue loops), and therefore it is suitable for rope suspension for emergency management.

Rescue crews will utilize the sturdy carbon-fibre-constructed XT to be part of their technical rescues that require removal of patients in difficult-to-reach or confined space areas while protecting against any spinal injuries that they may have suffered. Other spinal and cervical immobilization products within the market can be complex and time consuming to apply to a patient and the XT Pro intuitive design eliminates these concerns. Utilizing the efficient and effective head-immobilization system, cobra buckles with colour-coded restraint identification (red/yellow/green/black), padded leg restraints and 22kN-tested lifting strap means that a vertical lift in even the tightest areas can be performed ensuring patient safety.
Compared to other extrication devices that use a rescue triangle as a hanging point, the anchor point at the highest end of the carbon-fibre board makes some specific manoeuvres in tight spaces much easier. Its small size and light weight make it easy to pass through the tightest spaces, ensuring the immobilization of the cervical spine but at the same time the mobility of the patient’s legs. The presence of several rigid handles along the perimeter of the board allows a secure grip in the most uncomfortable conditions.

The Ferno XT Pro is compatible with other medical transport devices/stretchers that can be ‘suspended’ in the case of rope access techniques. The XT Pro is compatible with the use of rescue triangles with EN 1498:2007 certification.
