Fire destroyed part of Yau Ma Tei market but Firefighters save buildings

Hong Kong – A Fire broke out in the 100-year-old Yau Ma Tei’s wholesale fruit market at around 4:24pm on Sunday afternoon. During the 3rd alarm fire firefighters used eight jets, two turntable ladder monitors and three breathing apparatus teams to tackle the blaze. It was under control by 8:06pm.

The department deployed 154 fire services personnel, 32 fire trucks, and four ambulances. Kowloon West divisional commander of fire services Lo Kam-wing said around 40 people were evacuated and no casualties were reported. The cause of the fire was under investigation.

It is estimated the fire was contained to 10 stall due to excellent work by the Hong Kong fire service.
