Xtralis Li-ion Tamer® is the first off-gas detection sensor designed to specifically protect lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries, which are increasingly used in data centre uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems amongst other applications. Li-ion Tamer helps support data centre uptime and protect assets and people by providing the earliest possible warning of Li-ion cell failure that can lead to destructive fires and explosions.
Li-ion Tamer works differently from traditional gas sensors as it is specifically calibrated to detect battery electrolyte solvent vapours released in the initial stages of a battery failure. These vapours precede the exothermic reaction known as a thermal runaway that manifests itself in smoke, fire, and explosions.
In 2019 a DNV-GL project report, Technical Reference for Li-ion Battery Explosion Risk and Fire Suppression, found that Li-ion Tamer activated, on average, over six minutes before thermal runaway, and further internal analysis found that Li-ion Tamer can provide up to 25-minute warning. This significantly increases automated remote response capabilities, giving asset managers valuable time to safeguard mission-critical power.
