Firefighters and the 4 metre crocodile

Firefighters found themselves coming face to face with a 4-metre long pet crocodile while attending a house fire last Thursday (April 29th). The fire occurred at 10.00 am in a suburb of Darwin in northern Australia and destroyed the top floor of a home. Imagine the surprise to firefighters when they found a 4-metre pet crocodile in the backyard named Albert. Albert has been part or the family since 1958.

A firefighter said, “Thankfully the crocodile didn’t affect our operations at all, it was in an enclosure out the back” “The cause of the fire appeared to be an iron that had been left on”, said the Watch Commander.

Although firefighters in the Northern Territory are very aware of the dangers of crocodiles in the nearby rivers and lakes, Albert is believed to be the only adult saltwater crocodile living in a backyard in suburban Darwin, the family has a permit.
