Firefighters battle Johor hospital fire

Fire broke out in the Sultanah Aminah Hospital last Tuesday (25th Oct) killing six patients and requiring the hospital to be evacuated. The hospital is in the city of Johor Bahru near the Malaysia, Singapore boarder.

Firefighters found a ward well alight when they arrived 10 minutes after the alarm was raised and battled heat and smoke to rescue many from near the seat of the fire. The rest of the 294 patients and 193 employees of the hospital evacuated safely.

“Water sprinklers are installed in the hospital, but not the whole building. There are several wards, including the ICU ward, which did not have sprinklers. There are however sprinklers at the corridors,” Johor Baru Fire and Rescue Department station chief Ibrahim Omar said.

Ten trucks and 160 firefighters battled the blaze. The cause of the fire is being investigated.
