Firefighters have extinguished a blaze at Hasting’s Hawke’s Bay Opera House. Hastings is on the east side of the North Island and boasts one of the oldest and innovative concert venues in New Zealand. The Art Nouveau building was opened in 1915 and closed in 2014 due to poor earthquake engineering standards.
The fire which was reported at 10.15 pm on Sunday the 18 Nov was brought under control in an hour with nine of the cities appliance and was contained to the lower levels of the three-story building. It’s understood most of the damage was smoke-related.
Hastings Senior Station Officer, Mike Peachey said they were notified of the fire, by a crew attending a different fire job in Hastings.
The building was undergoing renovation and the cause is still being investigated.
