A sea tour boat was struck by a large blob of lava thrown up from a fissure caused by the ongoing eruption of Hawaii’s. The lava that burst through the roof of the tour boat injured twenty-three tourists. One woman suffered a broken leg from the incident.
When the boat returned to port three of the injured were taken to a hospital and the others treated on the spot by paramedics, ten were taken to hospital by private vehicles, County Fire Department Battalion Chief Darwin Okinaka said.
The tour boat takes visitors to see lava plunging into the ocean from the volcano that has been erupting for two months. The Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources said the boat was operated by Lava Ocean Tours, one of at least three companies offering daily excursions to watch from a vessel lava flowing into the sea.
Officials for the company were not immediately available for comment.
