Ignited Fuel Injures Spectators in Alice Springs Drag Racing Event
Twelve spectators sustained burn injuries whilst watching a burnout event at the Red Centre NATS in Alice Springs, Australia. The burnout event was part of a wider programme of on and off track competitions for car enthusiasts.
During the burnout drivers turn their cars in tights circles through wheelspins creating clouds of smoke from the burning rubber. It appears that fuel ignited and showered spectators watching the event from behind a concrete barrier and fence.
One person suffered serious burn injuries and eleven of the twelve injured required admission to hospital although two have since been released.
The event was cancelled after the incident which is subject to investigation by Police and Fire Officers.
