The Whangarei Airport (WRE), located on the North Island of New Zealand, is a new member to the AT family after recently taking possession of a MAN-based Rosenbauer AT 4×4.
Whangarei Airport’s AT is designed to give best-in-class performance and allow for the optimal use of space with safety and ergonomics for the crew. It offers more payload volume within the same compact outer dimensions, delivers an impactive lighting system, intuitive operation in-cab and at the rear, and powerful, integrated extinguishing technology.
It joins Australia’s Ventia ARRFF defence fleet that has been successfully operating similar vehicles for a number of years.
Advanced Technology (AT) stands for the most innovative and advanced firefighting and rescue vehicle superstructures in the world. AT means always up-to-date and familiar at the same time. The well-known advantages of the AT now take even greater effect. It combines all the functions and components that make a superior firefighting vehicle. It is multi-talented: safe and portable, compact and manoeuvrable, intuitive and simple, powerful and efficient and, last but not least, reliable and durable.
What makes the AT a success story is the continuous change. The AT concept has always been subject to further development. Like the industry and end users themselves, it requires constant evolution to accommodate new technology, equipment and practices.
Resourceful and capable to meet the requirements of civilian and military aviation firefighting operators, it is also one of the favourites of municipal agencies in many parts of the world. It offers and delivers superior capabilities on and off the airfield, adding versatility in response to all types of emergency scenarios.
As of 2020, almost 6,000 ATs in over 44 countries are deployed across the globe.
The AT offers great space-saving solutions. A docking system between the body and cab delivers more space in the crew cabin, lateral support for seats can be equipped with 2 or 3 point or split seat belt and tensioners when required. The integrated double cabin is also completely glare-free thanks to the use of indirect lighting, and the glass doors of the crew cab create better lighting inside the cabin and provide a clearer view of obstacles in the vicinity of the vehicle before exiting. If requested, the AT can also be equipped with rollover side airbags for further occupant protection.
Once at the scene of the operation, the driver presses a button, and the vehicle is secured. Depending on the programming, the scene arrival button automatically switches off the flashing lights and the siren while turning on the ambient lighting, the hazard warning lights and the traffic control system.
The extinguishing technology of the AT ‘thinks’ with you. A so-called ‘central water axis’ automatically takes over the logical distribution of the water to where it is needed: to the tank, to the pump, or to both at the same time. Regardless of whether water is sucked from a dirty pond or fed by a portable pump or from a hydrant, the water supply can always be connected to the central water axis in a user-friendly manner. This convenient solution applies whenever no open tank inlet is required by law. However, the AT would not be the AT had Rosenbauer not developed a unique, innovative solution for this requirement, with an optimal solution provided for the customer within the framework of the legal regulations. The AT has a suitable built-in pump for every need. All pumps can be equipped with a Rosenbauer FIXMIX admixing system. Pressure proportioning systems such as the DIGIMATIC are also available.
Further development also continued in the sphere of control technology. The Rosenbauer LCS 2.0 (Logic Control System) is based on CAN-bus technology, has a modular structure, and allows even complex processes to be clearly displayed and safely controlled. There are different sized displays, different key fields, and operation via a rotary knob.
LED technology is used throughout the AT. Large flat-beam LEDs are used for illuminating the surroundings. Powerful wide-beam LED spotlights are used as headlights. The equipment rooms are illuminated by LED strips, while the crew room is illuminated by indirect LED lighting.
The integrated twin cabin is impressive with its numerous safety and ergonomic features and offers the crew maximum space. SCBA holders in the crew cab can be installed both in as well as against the direction of travel. Three-point safety belts on all seats and a complete rollover airbag system on demand with belt tighteners for the outermost seats in the crew cabin provide even more safety for the crew.
A standard is set with the Rosenbauer rotating stairs. These allow the crew to enter and exit the vehicle quickly and safely. Even while wearing heavy breathing protection and when the door can only be opened halfway.
The operation of a firefighting vehicle must not be a mystery – especially when out on deployment. Rosenbauer therefore relies on a modern, self-explanatory operating system that is uniform in all its vehicles.

Whangarei District Airport is located approx. 185km north of New Zealand’s largest city Auckland, servicing the needs of major domestic airlines and home to private aeroplane owners, commercial helicopter operators, a very popular microlight club and, from late 2022, Rescue Helicopter Service.
With almost 110,000 passenger movements (pre-Covid 19), WRE (CAT 4 airfield) is northern New Zealand’s largest regional airport.
