Significant Earthquakes in Port Vila Region

The Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-Hazards Department in Port Vila yesterday afternoon noted two significant earthquakes in the region this week.

A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck at 02.47 pm – 84km NNE of Port-Vila, Vanuatu on Friday the 23rd January followed by a second 5.2 earthquake on the 25th January. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said there was no resulting tsunami.

This region of the Pacific is subject to many earthquakes and is one of the many concerns of the Pacific Islands Fire Services Association (PIFSA) which held its 8th Annual General Meeting in Nadi, Fiji this year.
