Three Assessors Appointed to Grenfell Inquiry

Chairman of the Grenfell Inquiry,  Sir Martin Moore-Bick, has appointed Professor David Nethercot, Joe Montgomery and Joyce Redfearn and to assist with the Grenfell Tower inquiry.

The role of assessors includes:

  • Taking part in Inquiry proceedings as requested by the Chairman
  • Providing suggested lines of questioning for witnesses to Counsel to the Inquiry; and
  • Providing assistance and advice on any other matter relevant to the Inquiry within their area of expertise

Assessors do not give evidence to the Inquiry, nor are they asked questions or cross-examined at the Inquiry.

Additional assessors may be appointed if the Chairman feels that this is required either for the duration of the Inquiry or for a specific part of the Inquiry.

Professor Nethercot’s role will involve reviewing investigating building issues relating to the design and construction of the Grenfell Tower and refurbishment works.

Joyce Redfearn will be seeking examples of best practice relating to the management practices of local authorities particularly with regard to finance, procurement of services for the design and construction of residential buildings. Joyce Redfearn will also look at the local government response in the days immediately following the fire.

Joe Montgomery will investigate issues associated with the occupation, community engagement and the management of social housing. This will focus on the processing of, and subsequent action by the local authority in relation to information associated with fire risks at Grenfell Tower.
