According to the Shizuoka Prefectural Police Headquarters, a fire broke out at 1:30am on the 5th July, at a warehouse on the premises of the “REC Shizuoka Second Factory” in Kawajiri, Yoshida-cho, Shizuoka Prefecture.
Three firefighters and a police officer were killed after entering the building. The officer and the firefighters entered the warehouse at a factory operated by household product maker Lec Inc. in the town of Yoshida before flames engulfed the building.
The fire burnt in the two-story, 7,000-square-meter warehouse for 16 hours before being brought under control.
Three other firefighters also sustained minor injuries due to the fire.
The warehouse, where sponges and sodium bicarbonate for household use were stored, was empty at the time, according to local police and Lec.
The cause of the fire is being investigated by police and fire authorities.
